Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'

3 of 13
6-8″ foliage, 12″ tall flowers, Space 8" apart, Zones 4-8, full sun, 4″ pot. Save 15% on four or more plants!

Seems to be the bluest of the ornamental fescues. Frequently used in mass by professional landscapers. Forms an attractive, porcupine-like mound of spiky, silvery-blue foliage. Tan flower spikes in mid-summer. Since it is evergreen in all but the harshest winters, it adds interest in the garden at a time when most other perennials are sleeping. It is a versatile plant that works well in containers, as edging in a border, or as an accent in rock gardens.

'Elijah Blue' has low water requirements and prefers well drained soil that is slightly dry. It has low fertility needs and can survive in very poor soils. However, while it is actively growing, it can use higher levels of nitrogen. If the foliage loses its blue color, an application of nitrogen fertilizer usually helps. Like other ornamental grasses, it is often beneficial to divide or replace Festuca every few years since the center tends to melt out in larger plants. For best foliage color, Festuca needs full sun, but it will also do well in partial shade.
